K. Fotouhi, University of Maryland Eastern Shore
Dr. K. Fotouhi has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore since the fall of 1983. He received his MS in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1979 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1983. He was an Interim Chair of the Department of Technology from 2018-to 2021.
Dr. Fotouhi has been active in area research and published numerous papers in Electrical Engineering and Solid- State Physics Fields. He has been involved in joint research in the growth and development of new semiconductors and Maryland off Shore Wind Energy Research and Smart Agriculture- Smart farming
He was the recipient of the 1990 University of Maryland Eastern Presidential Distinguished Research Award and also he is a member of ASEE and IEEE and the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society.
Dr. Abhijit Nagchaudhuri is currently a tenured professor in the Department of Engineering and Aviation Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore(UMES). Dr. Nagchaudhuri received his baccalaureate degree from Jadavpur University (India) with honors in mechanical engineering in 1983. Thereafter, he worked in a multinational industry for a little over three years before joining Tulane University as a graduate student in the fall of 1987. He received a master’s degree from Tulane University in 1989 and a doctoral degree from Duke University in 1992. He is a member of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and, American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and is actively involved in teaching and research in the fields of (i) robotics and mechatronics, (ii) remote sensing and precision agriculture, and,(iii) biofuels and renewable energy
Controlling a Robotic Arm with an ELVIS II University of Maryland Eastern Shore Abstract Design Technology II course offered at the University Maryland Eastern Shore is intended to give the students a real-world approach to design projects. The students are expected to design projects that are innovative, interesting and original by using the techniques, skills and knowledge and experiences they have gained in the numerous disciplines that offered at Engineering Technology Program. The objective of this Undergraduate project was to control the five movement of a robotic arm using the National Instrument ELVIS II. The ELVIS II was chosen as the microcontroller in this project, although it integrated and featured with 12 of the most commonly used instruments in the laboratory, including an oscilloscope, digital multimeter, function generator, variable power supply. When the ELVIS II board is connected to the PC through USB plug-and-play, it allows various measurements on a circuit or design and build a protoboard circuit to explore many of its capabilities. to control the movement of the robots’ arm, an interfaced circuit was designed using the ELVIS II board to manipulate five motors’ motions that responsible for move robot in different directions.
This paper explains the details project and experiences gained by student after completion of the projects.
