Dr. Ardakani is an assistant professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the Coordinator of Statics for the T.J. Smull College of Engineering at Ohio Northern University. He has previously served as Project Engineer at Englekirk Structural Engineers and Lecturer at South Dakota State University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. His research interests include seismic performance and design of reinforced concrete structures, computational modeling of structures, and engineering education. He received the 2020-21 Professor Henry Horldt Outstanding Teaching Award.
Joshua Ellis will be a Senior at Ohio Northern University pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Major and a Business Administration Minor. He also plays soccer for the University and is on the leadership council with the program.
The 3D-Printed Statics Modeling Kit is a dynamic and customizable apparatus that allows professors to demonstrate the fundamental ideas in a Statics Engineering Course. The Kit allows students to visualize problems and perform hands-on activities. It includes a table with a grid of holes, adjustable-height pulleys, beams, supports, string and masses. With the contents of the Statics Modeling Kit, one is able to demonstrate just about any statics problem with 98% accuracy, which allows students to better visualize complicated 3D problems within the class. The Kit is used in a classroom setting where groups of students are given the corresponding activity book, which leads students through the important topics in Statics. This includes force vectors, dot product, particle equilibrium, and rigid body equilibrium. Over the course of the semester, students work together on the given problems, which allows them to collaborate and ask questions when needed. The goal of the 3D-Printed Statics Modeling Kit is to give students a better look at complicated problems in order to help them visualize their calculations for a better understanding. This helps them succeed in Statics as well as gives them a better foundation going into higher classes. After a semester of work with the Kit and corresponding activities, students demonstrated a stronger understanding of the topics applied and enjoyed the activities as a whole. Grade improvements were seen with the use of the 3D-Printed Kit and corresponding activities when compared to years past. The Kit and activities not only gave instructors the opportunity to teach important topics in Statics with a new approach, but also gave students the chance to learn in a way they enjoy.
