Nusaybah Abu-Mulaweh is a Lecturer in the EPICS Program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She received her BS in Computer Engineering from Purdue University Fort Wayne, and received her MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. After working as a software engineer in industry, she returned to academia as a lecturer and she is currently pursuing her PhD in Engineering Education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

William (Bill) Oakes is a 150th Anniversary Professor, Director of the EPICS Program, Professor of Engineering Education at Purdue University, and a registered professional engineer. He is one of the founding faculty in the School of Engineering Education having courtesy appointments in Mechanical, Environmental and Ecological Engineering and Curriculum and Instruction. He was the first engineer to receive the U.S. Campus Compact Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning and a co-recipient of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering’s Bernard Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education. He is a fellow of ASEE and NSPE.

Dr. Justin L Hess is an assistant professor in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University. His vision is to inspire change in engineering culture to become more socially responsive, environmentally friendly, and inclusive, thereby providing opportunities for all current and prospective engineers to reach their maximum potential. Dr. Hess’s research focuses on empathy, equity, and ethics in engineering education. He received his PhD from Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education, as well as a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from Purdue University’s School of Civil Engineering. He is the 2022 division chair for the ASEE Liberal Education/Engineering and Society division; deputy director of research for the National Institute of Engineering Ethics; and the editorial board chair for the Online Ethics Center.

Abstract

This Work in Progress paper presents an ongoing study on empathic development within a community-engaged engineering design course. Empathy is increasingly recognized as a critical skill and disposition for engineering practice as it can help engineers effectively contribute to the needs of their community. Understanding how empathy changes in a community-engaged design experience can inform the development of a wide range of design and community engagement experiences. The study employs a sequential explanatory mixed methods focused on the empathic development of students enrolled in a community-engaged design course. In the first phase, we compare empathic development using pre- and post-data collection of three empathy constructs and community partner interaction surveys. In the second qualitative phase, we conduct semi-structured interviews with students who completed both surveys. The qualitative phase builds on the results from the quantitative phase and provides insights into the empathic development and import of community relationships identified therein. As this is an ongoing study, this paper will focus on presenting the study design, including the quantitative data collection and analysis approach. Results will be available for the presentation at the time of the conference. While a single course may not have wide ranging changes across the population, it is expected that aspects of the program will show impact and these will be explored.
