Dr. Ali Zilouchian is currently the Director of Applied Engineering Research Center and Program Director at Keiser University. He is also the founding Director of a $4.5 Million Dollars grant from DOE at Florida Atlantic University (2016-2022).
In this session, a pilot program addressing critical needs identified by the National Science Foundation (NSF) report on Building Capacity at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) is outlined. The program, developed at [University], focuses on redesigning the curriculum to incorporate recent advances in emerging technology, attracting and retaining high-potential, low-income, and Hispanic students in engineering, and enhancing evidence-based student-centered initiatives to support degree completion and career success. Building upon successful STEM research projects, the session discusses the revision of the Applied Engineering program at [University], introducing new tracks and certification programs. Early exposure to applied engineering majors through interventions like Introduction to Engineering aims to motivate students and provide insights into professional engineering roles. The revised curriculum features three specialized tracks: Alternative Energy Track: This track addresses the growing demand for green workforce development, offering exposure to various clean energy technologies such as solar, wind, fuel cells, and biofuels. Courses include Introduction to Sustainable Energy, Solar Energy, Electrical Vehicles and Sustainability, Solar Energy and Smart Grid, Renewable Distributed Generation, and Fuel Cell Technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Track: Integrating soft computing paradigms, this track incorporates human expert knowledge in complex systems. The curriculum focuses on applications-oriented and hands-on learning, emphasizing adaptability and learning from the environment. Biotechnology Track: This track integrates natural science and engineering for the utilization of biological systems, creating diverse products and services. Courses cover topics like Biotechnology Fundamentals, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Industrial Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and Systems Biology. These curriculum enhancements aim to provide a comprehensive educational experience, addressing industry demands and supporting the diverse needs of students at HSIs. The students are provided with certification of the selected track after the completion of their academic requirements.
