Jenna Wong

Dr. Wong is an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering at San Francisco State University. Her research interests focus on the structural resilience/sustainability, high performance structures, and engineering education. Her doctorate research at UC Berkeley investigated the applicability of seismic isolation and supplemental viscous damping to nuclear power plants with focus on seismic resilience and safety. After receiving her PhD, Dr. Wong began a post-doctoral fellowship at Lawrence National Laboratory focusing on developing a modern computational framework for the nonlinear seismic analysis of Department of Energy nuclear facilities and systems. For her engineering education research, she is interested in exploring how to use technology such as virtual reality and 3D printing to enhance student engagement. She is an active member of ASCE, ASEE, and SEAONC.

Shah Rukh Humayoun San Francisco State University

Dr. Shah Rukh Humayoun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, San Francisco State University (SFSU), USA. His current research topics include human-computer interaction, virtual reality, information visualization, visual analytics, and software engineering. He has co-organized more than 10 workshops in his area of research interests with many reputable ACM/IEEE venues. He has served as an organizing committee member, PC member and reviewers in several ACM and IEEE conferences. Dr. Humayoun holds PhD degree in Computer Engineering from the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy and MSc degree in Software Engineering from the University of York, United Kingdom. Before joining SFSU, he did his post-doctoral fellowships from Computer Graphics and HCI lab at University of Kaiserslautern, Germany and Visual Analytics Lab at Tufts University, USA. He is a professional member of ACM.

Abstract

Structural Engineering is an abstract field of study that relies heavily on students’ ability to visualize. Due to the scale of structural projects (e.g. bridges, buildings), it is not possible to provide students hands-on experiences manipulating and handling structural elements. Bringing students to the construction site is one of the most effective ways of reinforcing the subject matter as well as instilling a sense of awe and motivation for academic progress. However, the scheduling of field trips is very difficult due to students’ academic and work schedules along with changes in site access due to COVID-19. San Francisco State University’s Virtual Reality Engineering Program (VR Engine) was born out of a necessity to apply technology to advance efforts to engage and motivate students through inclusive teaching. This work in progress is using VR to develop immersive experiences to expand structural engineering students’ perspectives and create interactive exercises to reinforce course material. As this work is being done in collaboration with the Computer Science department, this work also serves as an excellent opportunity to further research related to human-technology interfacing. VR is an emerging and affordable technology that immerses users in an artificial interactive environment using visual and auditory stimulation along with controllers for active engagement. Current efforts are utilizing common industry software, e.g., SAP2000 and Revit, to develop structural models and expand their potential through VR development using toolkits such as Unity. The VR exercises currently under development are generating structural systems to expose students to seismic technology, including seismic isolation. Through the implementation of these VR exercises, we aim to increase students’ engagement and material comprehension in upper division structural engineering courses.
