Abstract

In 2017, the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) modified Criterion 3 (Student Outcomes) from eleven Student Outcomes (SOs a – k) to seven Student Outcomes (SOs 1 – 7). Most major concepts found within SOs a – k were captured in the transition to SOs 1 – 7; however, several terms were selectively eliminated while other new terminology was added. While ABET publications have listed the changes between ABET EAC SOs a – k and SOs 1 – 7, no linguistic analysis of the transition is readily available. The purpose of this study, therefore, is threefold. The first purpose is to provide an in-depth linguistic crosswalk of terminology used in ABET EAC SOs a – k and SOs 1 – 7. The second is to provide definitions of key terminology used in ABET EAC SOs 1 – 7. The third is to provide a framework for mapping embedded indicators within an environmental engineering curriculum to key words in SOs 1 – 7 for assessment and evaluation purposes. We hypothesize that some programs may overlook these changes and their assessment and evaluation of ABET EAC SOs 1 – 7 could be incomplete. This paper can be useful for programs who remain in a transition between ABET EAC SOs a – k and the new SOs 1 – 7, or for programs who want to cross-check their approach with ours. Our hope is that this study provides baseline definitions for key words in ABET EAC SOs 1 – 7 for the greater engineering community.
