Herb Hess is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Idaho. His research and teaching interests are in Power Electronics, Electric Machinery, Electrical Energy Storage, and Electric Power Distribution. He regularly teaches senior electrical engineering design. He has published more than 150 papers on topics within his research and teaching interests. Herb is a technical program chair of the Instrumentation Division of ASEE. He is active in the Energy Conversion, Conservation, and Nuclear Engineering Division. Herb a Fellow of the ASEE.
A team of four undergraduate senior engineering design students complete a project to create a mobile platform for the university marching band. They assemble documents and equipment from an earlier design attempt. In coordination with the band director, they draw up specifications for the unit. They build a frame and platform in coordination with a mechanical engineering design team. They design an energy management system to propel the platform as specified. Difficulties with motors, batteries, and expectations are overcome. The resulting unit performs as specified in four home football games. The project was completed on budget. Recommendations for further improvement are presented. Assessment of successful aspects of the project are given from a technical perspective and from a client perspective.
