Abstract

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) started the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) in 1980 to facilitate the organization, collection, and reporting of fields of study and program completions. While engineering management was previously listed under CIP 14 for “Engineering”, in 2000 it was moved to CIP 15 “Engineering/Engineering-related Technologies/Technicians”. In effect, the federal government views engineering management programs as Engineering Technology. This paper explores the status of CIP codes for engineering management instructional programs, the uses of CIP codes in higher education, the procedure to obtain a new CIP Code, and reasons why the engineering management community may want to return to a CIP 14 code.
