This abstract will be followed by a full paper. The Strengthening Equitable Culturally Responsive Environments (SECURE) for Student Success (SfS2) project at California State University Northridge (CSUN), in partnership with LA Pierce College and College of the Canyons, aims to support Hispanic and underrepresented students, particularly in Art, Health Sciences, Engineering, and STEM. As one of California’s largest Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), with 57% of students identifying as Hispanic and 71% as first-generation, CSUN faces challenges including declining enrollment, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this paper is to disclose the experiences of a group of faculty who formed a community of practice to engage in culturally relevant curriculum development and enhance their capacity for culturally responsive teaching. Through two social justice workshops, more than 10 faculty members engaged in team-based exercises to make syllabi and course activities more inclusive. Faculty reported that these workshops improved their understanding of cultural competence and student belonging, particularly for Hispanic and Latine students. Workshop assessments and analysis of their feedback highlighted the need for more practical examples and small-group discussions to enhance teaching and advising. Faculty also expressed interest and need for STEM-focused content and mentoring techniques to better support first-generation students. This work is a stepping stone toward SfS2’s five-year goals, which include a 10-20% increase in degree completion rates for Hispanic and low-income students and the development of over 50 culturally responsive courses. Culturally responsive evaluation methods, incorporating direct feedback from CSUN faculty and partner institutions, ensure continuous improvement in learning effectiveness and aim to establish equitable educational environments.
