Brianna Buljung Colorado School of Mines
Brianna is the Teaching and Learning librarian at the Colorado School of Mines. She collaborates with faculty to design and implement information literacy throughout the curriculum. Prior to her work at the School of Mines, she was the Engineering and Computer Science Librarian at the US Naval Academy and a contract Reference Librarian assigned to the National Defense University. She earned her MLIS at the University of Denver in 2011.
Lisa Dunn Colorado School of Mines
Lisa G. Dunn is Head of Research Services and a STEM librarian at the Colorado School of Mines. With a master's degree in geology, she earned an MLS focused on science librarianship. Dunn worked at the Montana College of Mineral Science & Engineering before coming to the Colorado School of Mines in 1991. Her interests include science and engineering librarianship, scholarly communication in the geosciences, evolution of reference services, and STEM archives management.
Seth Vuletich Colorado School of Mines
Seth Vuletich is the Visiting Scholarly Communications Librarian the Colorado School of Mines. Seth provides specialized support to graduate students through all stages of the research lifecycle. Prior to entering the field of librarianship, Seth was a professional woodworker and earned a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Seth earned his Master's in Library and Information Science from the University of Denver in 2021.
Emily Bongiovanni Carnegie Mellon University
Emily Bongiovanni (she/her) is the Psychology and Social & Decision Sciences Liaison Librarian at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). At CMU, Emily supports the teaching and research needs of Psychology and Social & Decision Sciences students and faculty. In this role, Emily is also active in supporting the Open Science and Open Educational Resources activities across campus. Before joining CMU, Emily was the Scholarly Communications Librarian at Colorado School of Mines, where she supported faculty and students throughout the research lifecycle and promoted Open Science. She went to Denison University for her undergraduate degree and earned her Masters of Library and Information Science at the University of Denver.
Abstract
Information seekers’ increasing comfort in leveraging research technology has reduced demand for traditional models of reference services, while highlighting the role of expert assistance when navigating complex information needs. Librarians at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) are exploring how to provide meaningful research support to faculty, postdocs and graduate students on campus while maintaining some aspects of traditional reference services that focus on undergraduates. This study explores the concierge or boutique model that provides individualized, flexible, value-added services within the larger scope of the library. A literature review, internal scan of the Mines institutional context and an outward environmental scan are combined to evaluate feasibility of designing boutique research services in a mid-sized STEM-focused library. Lessons learned in this exploration will influence the design of a pilot program to be implemented in the Mines library.
