Jim Kuo is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the California State University, Los Angeles. His teaching focus is on thermofluids courses. His research interests are in the area of renewable energy, thermal management, and engineering education.
This paper presents the methodology and findings of a collaborative research project that aims at exploring effective strategies to make instructional videos more relevant and engaging to engineering students. During the research process, two pilot interactive videos were developed using participatory design thinking (PDT), where students with diverse cultural backgrounds served as co-designers to closely work with the faculty in each of the design stages, namely empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The pilot video was used in two classes, ME 3030 (Fluid Mechanics) and ME 2030 (Introduction to Mechanical Design), and a mixed research methodology was applied to analyze the effectiveness of PDT-based videos. The research findings showed that involving students in the educational design process improves the confidence and success of the engineering students interacting with the content. Students in both courses responded positively to the videos design strategies including expert modeling, making the thinking process visible, and making connections between theory and practice. Specifically, students reported increased interest in the subject, better understanding of the content, and more engagement when learning through the videos. The paper also shares useful practices in video development including technology and lessons learned with the broader engineering education community.
