This paper presents the journey of participating in the JUMP into STEM competition for the second time. The initial experience was presented at the ASEE Gulf Southwest Conference 2023, highlighting that the JUMP into STEM is a dynamic building science competition organized by national laboratories with the support of the Department of Energy. The competition's objective is to inspire and attract a diverse array of undergraduate and graduate students from various majors to engage in building science, fostering creative innovation, and addressing workforce gaps in the field. Each year, organizers introduce new challenges. For the 2023 competition, the challenge topics were Keepin’ it Cool (or Hot), That’s a Wrap!, and You and Me, Carbon Free!. Three teams of graduate students, enrolled in the course MENG 5318 – HVAC, participated in the competition with projects that also served as assignments for the course grade. Results from a survey applied to assess the project indicates that the assigned projects reinforced the material covered in the course. By examining the nuances of the second JUMP into STEM experience, this paper aims to contribute valuable perspectives to the discourse on STEM education, emphasizing the importance of project-based learning, and highlighting the additional benefits of participating in a national competition.
