Abstract

EvaluateUR-CURE (E-CURE), a variant of the EvaluateUR method, provides an objective assessment of the value of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) by documenting student growth in critical academic and workforce-related knowledge and skills. By modifying EvaluateUR procedures to accommodate CUREs, many more students conducting research can benefit from the method. Findings reported previously by XXX and YYY (2021) demonstrated how the outcomes used in E-CURE are well aligned with performance indicators/rubrics of ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) Criterion 3 Student Outcomes. This paper extends their work to another variant of the EvaluateUR method known as Evaluate-Compete (E-Compete). E-Compete is designed for teams of students preparing to participate in engineering/design competitions as part of a capstone course or as an extracurricular activity. E-Compete is well-aligned with engineering/engineering technology projects and further extends the research settings where the EvaluateUR method contributes to improving student learning and metacognition. In addition to a set of general outcomes such as communication, problem solving, ability to overcome obstacles, and teamwork, competition-specific outcomes are included based on competition guidelines. To date, outcomes that align with judges' rubrics had been developed for remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) and Baja SAE competitions. E-Compete has the potential to be adopted by other engineering/engineering technology departments offering design experience related to collegiate competitions as an approach to provide students with constructive feedback about their progress, while at the same time tapping into their students’ metacognitive skills. This in turn is invaluable to the students as they continue their education and enter the workplace.

This paper addresses the process of development of performance indicators/rubrics associated with ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and ETAC Criterion 3 Student Outcomes and presents the results of assessment and evaluation of both ETAC ABET and EvaluateUR-CURE/E-Compete student outcomes.
