Eric J. Estadt is a senior at The Pennsylvania State University - Abington Campus. He will be graduating in the Spring of 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. His responsibilities in this project was leadership, development, and statistics. He worked on development since February 2022. In the Spring and Summer of 2023 he worked on the methodology and statistical results of the experiments seen in this paper. Continuing in the Summer of 2023 he took a more leadership focused role. This role included the responsibilities of planning and managing weekly reviews and managing edits to meet the over-seeing professor's, Dr. Sabahattin Gokhan Ozden, expectations for the paper. He has since moved in to full-stack web development for the continuation of the development of WARP.
Khoa Nguyen is a senior at Penn State Abington. He major in Computer Science and will be graduating in Fall of 2024.
He is currently working under Dr. Sabahattin Gokhan Ozden for the AR Warehouse project. His contribution in the project are the AR web application.
Kevin Skinner is a senior at Pennsylvania State University - Abington Campus, and will be graduating with Bachelor of Computer Science in Fall of 2024. He has been active as a member of the AR Warehouse project under Dr. Sabahattin Gokhan Ozden since Summer of 2022. In this role, he has served as the application's graphic designer and has been a major contributor for the project's research.
Dr. Ashkan Negahban is an Associate Professor of Engineering Management at The Pennsylvania State University, School of Graduate Professional Studies. He received his Ph.D. and master’s degrees from Auburn University (USA) and his BS from University of Tehran (all in Industrial and Systems Engineering). His research involves stochastic simulation methods, primarily agent-based and discrete-event simulation. Dr. Omar Ashour is an Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, The Behrend College. Dr. Ashour received the B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering/Manufacturing Engineering and the M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in 2005 and 2007, respectively. He received his M.Eng. degree in Industrial Engineering/Human Factors and Ergonomics and a Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Dr. Ashour was the inaugural recipient of William and Wendy Korb's Early Career Professorship in Industrial Engineering in 2016. Dr. Ashour’s research areas include data-driven decision-making, modeling and simulation, data analytics, immersive technologies, and process improvement. He contributed to research directed to improve design and engineering education.
Dr. Sabahattin Gokhan Ozden is an assistant professor of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State Abington. He has a Ph.D. and MISE from Auburn University in Industrial and Systems Engineering and a B.Sc. in Software Engineering and double major in Industrial Systems Engineering from Izmir University of Economics.
His research interests are warehousing, optimization, and information systems. Dr. Ozden has published in various journals/conferences including Computers and Operations Research and Naval Research Logistics. His website address is https://www.gokhanozden.com.
In this paper, we introduce the Warehouse Augmented Reality Program (WARP), its functionality, practicality, and potential use cases in education. We build this application on the backbone of WebXR. Using this application programming interface (API), we create an interactive web tool that displays a life-sized warehouse in augmented reality (AR) in front of users that can be viewed on a smartphone or a tablet. AR is a technology that displays virtual objects in the real world on a digital device’s screen, allowing users to interact with virtual objects and locations while moving about a real-world environment. This tool can enhance warehousing education by making it immersive and more interactive. In addition, the tool can make warehousing operations more efficient and warehouse design less costly. We highlight how our tool can be applicable and beneficial to education and industry. We demonstrate how this tool can be integrated into a problem-based learning (PBL) assignment about warehouse layout design and order picking. The PBL activity involves comparing two different warehouse layouts (fishbone and traditional) by completing a set of order picking tasks in AR warehouse environments. The task is to perform single item picking over thirty orders and comparing the average order picking time per layout. Then, we use the results of these human subject experiments for validating the realism of the warehouse layouts generated by the tool by comparing the empirical completion times with the analytical results from the literature. We also administer a system usability scale (SUS) survey and collect feedback from industry experts.
