Dr Gertner joined the Computer Science Department at the University of Illinois in 2020 as a Teaching Assistant Professor. She received her B.S. and MEng in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, and Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania. She was a Beckman Fellow at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her current focus is on broadening participation in Computer Science and Computer Science Education She has been developing materials and teaching for iCAN, a new program for broadening participation in CS for students who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than computer science.

Abstract

At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we have created and piloted the iCAN (Illinois Computing Accelerator for Non-specialists) program. iCAN is a new and innovative one-year (fall, spring, summer) online graduate certificate program in computing fundamentals (programming, algorithms, data structures) for students who have a Bachelors (or higher) degree with little to no background in computing. Our iCAN program consists of a 20-credit hour curriculum and leverages a cohort-based learning model that provides students with a supportive community of engaged peers. Our admissions process encourages applicants to provide a holistic narrative of their personal and career experiences. Up to eight graduate credit hours can be transferred to the Master's or PhD graduate programs in computer science at our university.

Our first cohort (Fall 2020) consisted of seven students (4 women, 3 men), where four students are from non-STEM backgrounds. Our second cohort (Fall 2021) of students consists of 14 students (7 women, 7 men), where six students are from non-STEM backgrounds. Domestic students self-identified as Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and White. Students' ages include 20s (7) and 30s-50s (7). From our first cohort, four students have graduated; three are pursuing a full Master's degree in CS and one has graduated with a Master’s degree in CS. Students in the second (Fall 2021) cohort will begin graduating in summer 2022.

Thus, our iCAN program prepares non-computing college graduates to pursue tech careers in industry or pursue a full graduate degree in CS while broadening participation in computing.
