Paul A. Leidig is a PhD candidate in Engineering Education and a member of the instructional team for the Engineering Projects In Community Service (EPICS) program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He received his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Masters of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mr. Leidig is licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of Colorado and has six years of structural engineering consulting experience. He currently consults on learning and talent development programs within the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Mr. Leidig has focused on community-engaged engineering and design for over fifteen years.
Addressing complex, ill-defined problems is core to engineering practice and requires competencies in design. In order to train engineering graduates appropriately, we need to understand ways to support their growth from novice to informed designers. Within experiential learning settings, such support can be characterized as just-in-time improvisational design coaching attuned to the specific situation. This work-in-progress paper presents a prototype design coach playbook structure for use by instructors in such environments as well as its application through three preliminary scenarios. The playbook structure is designed to serve as an instructor reflective tool to illuminate challenging concepts for students and then to facilitate identification and implementation of best practices to help students work through the challenges they face. Information is shared in this paper to prompt feedback as we progress in developing this framework and pursue opportunities to utilize it with a wider community of engineering design educators.
