I'm an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia. My research interests include engineering pedagogy (process safety, professional skills), upstream bioprocess engineering, and environmental remediation.
Research and teaching laboratories in academic institutions have a responsibility to create and maintain a safe working environment for students, faculty, and staff. More specifically, Chemical Engineering departments have the dual responsibility of providing students with safety training in the lab and safety education in the classroom. Finding a balance to deliver both safety training and safety education, and doing so within the restrictive environment of a packed curriculum, can be a challenging task for lab instructors. In this paper, we share the design, implementation, and assessment of several new education interventions (e.g. safety moments, incident reporting) used to promote safety in the laboratory. We surveyed student perceptions about safety to assess the effectiveness of these methods. We report that after engaging with these interventions students became more aware of the available safety systems in the lab, they more openly discussed safety management with instructors, teaching assistants, and peers, and they sought opportunities to report on and respond to safety concerns. This paper is a work-in-progress.
