Sheryl A. Sorby University of Cincinnati

Dr. Sheryl Sorby is currently a Professor of STEM Education at the University of Cincinnati and was recently a Fulbright Scholar at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Dublin, Ireland. She is a professor emerita of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Technological University and the P.I. or co-P.I. on more than $14M in grant funding, most for educational projects. She is the former Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Engineering at Michigan Tech and she served at the National Science Foundation as a Program Director in the Division of Undergraduate Education from January 2007 through August 2009. Prior to her appointment as Associate Dean, Dr. Sorby served as chair of the Engineering Fundamentals Department at Michigan Tech. She received a B.S. in Civil Engineering, an M.S. in Engineering Mechanics, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics, all from Michigan Tech. Dr. Sorby has a well-established research program in spatial visualization and is actively involved in the development of various educational programs.

Gibin Raju is a graduate student pursuing Ph.D. in Engineering Education Studies with the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati. His research interests are focused on spatial visualization, engineering design, cognition, problem-solving, stem accessibility issues, workforce development, STEM education, and education practices.

Abstract

Abstract This workshop is an interactive session where participants will experience an exciting approach for holistically assessing design problems, Adaptive Comparative Judgement (ACJ). ACJ is an adaptive software tool that can be used by students and faculty to assess students’ work holistically and reliably. This tool can be used to reduce the grading load associated with project work and reduce the time taken to grade and provide feedback to students. The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to the ACJ approach. The process underpinning the ACJ software tool will be explored, and participants will be taken through the procedure of setting up an ACJ session and given the opportunity to experience the process of assessment using the ACJ tool. Following this hands-on experience of ACJ, participants and facilitators will discuss the possible benefits and challenges of using ACJ in a formative and summative assessment capacity with first-year engineering students. Workshop attendees will require a device that is wireless fidelity enabled.
