Youth Engineering Solutions (YES) Out of School: Engineering Opportunities in Out-of-School Programs for English Learners (Els) is investigating ways that equity-oriented OS engineering curricula provide opportunities for ELs to learn knowledge, discourses, and practices; bring their cultures, experiences, and ideas to engineering projects; expand their repertoire of identities and interests; and enhance membership in learning communities. In this paper we describe a model for equity-oriented engineering learning that we developed and how it formed a basis for curriculum design. We demonstrate how principles related to socially engaged engineering, engineering practices, language scaffolds, and family engagement are embedded throughout the curricular materials, articulate how we chose to make curricular materials educative for users, and describe considerations for out-of-school programming.
