Abstract

Engaging Student Learning Through Public Service Projects “Hands on” experiences help students better apply what is learned in the classroom.Construction students learn to manage construction projects and need to develop ability inleadership, organizational skills, and customer relations. Unfortunately, the classroom canonly provide the background and theory for any of these people oriented skills. At our University, we encourage our students to engage in public service projects togive back to the community. We have established relationships with a few non-profitorganizations to have our students complete projects at these non-profit organizations.Usually, these projects are funded by the non-profit organization and the students becomethe contractor. The students set up the parameters of the project and organize the wholeeffort to the final product. We have had successful engagements and satisfied customers. The experience has been very worthwhile to our students.
