Abstract

Teaching PLC Programming and Industrial Automation in Mechatronics EngineeringAbstractProgrammable Logic Controller (PLC) is an industrial computer which takes in data fromsensors and sends commands to actuators to implement complex industrial controls. Since PLCcontrollers are highly configurable, they have been widely used in various industries rangingfrom automotive, nuclear power and energy systems, material handling to food manufacturing.Due to higher demands in industries, PLC programming course as well as the fundamentals ofindustrial automation has been introduced and taught by many universities and colleges. In this paper, we present an approach to teach PLC programming and industrial automationcourses for students in Mechatronic Engineering at a college in Northeast United States. In thePLC programming course, we mainly introduced text languages, such as instruction list andstructured text, according to IEC61131 standard so that students can have a fundamental conceptabout PLC programming. The universal knowledge about PLC programming allows students totalk with the people from different counties of the world, Asians, Europeans and Americans. Inthe advanced course, Industrial Automation, we focus on teaching students the sequence controlconcept and problem solving strategy. For the advanced course, Ladder Diagram (LD) andSequential Function Chart (SFC) are used to put the designs into operations. From students’comments, the teaching approach was very successful. Students have developed various projectsusing the knowledge they learned from PLC Programming and Industrial Automation coursesand their paper have been presented at the college technical conferences, several ASEE regionalconferences and the Latin American Caribbean Conference for Engineering and Technology.Furthermore, a number of students have chosen PLC programming and industrial automation astheir career goal to pursue in their future. Keywords: PLC programming, Sequence control, Ladder Diagram.
