Masoud Fathizadeh P.E. Purdue University, Calumet (College of Technology)

Masoud Fathizadeh – PhD, PE Professor Fathizadeh has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology Purdue University Calumet since 2001. He has worked over 15 years both for private industries and national research laboratories such as NASA, Argonne and Fermi National Laboratories. Dr. Fathizadeh has established his own consulting and engineering company in 1995 specializing in power system, energy management and automation systems. During last twenty years the company performed many private and government projects. Dr. Fathizadeh has published numerous journal, conference and technical articles. He has been instrumental figure in establishing mechatronic engineering technology at Purdue University Calumet. His areas of interests are, control systems, power systems, power electronics, energy, and system integration.
Dr. Fathizadeh is a registered professional engineer in the State of Illinois.

Abstract

Experiential learning gives students abilities they need for actual-global achievement. Students as well as their parents are seeking for an education that teaches the students the skills that they can utilize in real world applications. Despite the fact that colleges and universities are able to replicate or simulate some of real-world problems within the lecture room or laboratory settings, exposing students with actual real-world experiments as well as hands-on practices can bring another dimension to their learning and understanding of the subject. Experiential learning creates a useful possibility to prepare students for profession or research carriers. When college students are given opportunities to examine in real-world situations on campus or in the network like the ones furnished in internships, area placements, and industrial project partnerships, the mastering becomes extensively more effective. By way of engaging in formal, guided, proper, actual-experience, the students can increase their knowledge, develop skills and enhance their learning. One of the most effective way of conducting internship program is to engage and partner with industry and find proper projects for the students. Selection of a project must be done carefully to meet certain requirements such as; degree of difficulty, matched with student’s technical background, duration of project, safety, availability and logistics. Two projects are presented in this paper to demonstrate the effectiveness of industry sponsored internship. In the first project students designed, developed drawing, selected and procured components, assembled and programmed PLC for actual packaging machine. The second project utilized students background in energy and power system to design, purchase, install and commissioned a residential solar power system. This paper provides the challenges regarding the creation or securing of actual projects suitable for experiential learning, evaluation and assessment of two internship projects conducted with the industrial partnership.
