Robert Gilbert Sinclair Community College

Robert B. Gilbert, Ph.D., LEED AP, BAP, is a Professor of Energy Management Technology, and the Director of the Center for Energy Education at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Assistant Director of the Industrial Assessment Center at the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. He has served on the Ohio Board of Building Standards filling the position Renewable Energy, and he is currently a director on the Board of Directors of Green Energy Ohio. In addition, Bob serves on the Faculty Renewable Energy Review Panel for the Ohio Board of Regents and is President of the Southwester Ohio Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers. Bob received recognition as Innovator of the Year by the college and the League for Innovation for providing the leadership and organization in the creation of the energy lab at Sinclair Community College which includes a 3 kW wind turbine, 1.4 kW solar PV system, a working biodiesel processing system supplying fuel for the grounds equipment, a solar thermals system and many other renewable system many community outreach activities such as solar racers and an energy bike. Bob has been the recipient of the John & Suanne Roueche Excellence in Teaching Award by the League for Innovation and many other awards.

Abstract

The xxxxxxxxxx and xxxxxxxxxx partnered, under the lead of xxxxxxxxxx of the xxxxxxxxxx, and received a grant from the Ohio Department of Development to develop a statewide program to train students from colleges and universities to perform commercial energy audits. xxxxxxxxxx was responsible for obtaining college and university partners from strategic locations around the state of Ohio and training those partners. Collectively, these partners performed a total of 49 audits. Priority was given to government and educational facilities. xxxxxxxxxx students performed 16 commercial audits which included defined energy efficiency measures, (EEM), and energy, cost and CO2 savings. A formal report was given to the appropriate facilities personnel which documented the audit and savings.

As a strong partner, the xxxxxxxxxx has had a Department of Energy funded Industrial Assessment Center since the 1980’s and has performed over 960 industrial assessments. They have developed software, spreadsheet, and recommendation formats which they shared with the Ohio Lean Building project partners. Training sessions brought all the project partners together to learn to use the materials and a report format which was developed and used by all the partners for conducting the audits. The students selected to participate in the program had a combination of energy management and HVAC courses and exceptional skills in excel and programing. The students, under the direction of their advisor, visited the facilities, collected data from blueprints, specifications, item counting, and data logging systems. The structure of the project, examples of software and spreadsheet used, report format, examples of frequent energy efficient measures are presented in this paper.
