Immanuel A. Edinbarough received his B.Sc. (Applied Sciences) degree from PSG College of Technology, University of Madras, India, his B.E.. (M.E.) degree from the Institution of Engineers, India, M.E. (Production Engineering) degree from PSG College of Technology, Bharathiar University, India, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Bharathiar University, India. He is currently a professor and director of engineering technology at the University of Texas, Brownsville (UTB). Prior to joining the UTB faculty he was a visiting professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology and an associate professor of production engineering technology at PSG College of Technology, Bharathiar University, India, where he served as the director of the Computer Vision Laboratory and National Cadet Corps – Engineering Division Director. With over 26 years of teaching and research experience in manufacturing/mechanical engineering and engineering technology, he currently teaches in the areas of CAD/CAM/CIM, robotics and automation, product and process design, materials and manufacturing processes, machine design, renewable energy and micro-manufacturing. His current research interests include robotics, CIM, sustainable manufacturing, micro machining and engineering and technology education. He has published several papers in these areas in various national and international conferences and journals. He has worked in heavy and light manufacturing industries, manufacturing pumps, motors, and CNC machine tools in the areas of system design, production planning, and control and manufacturing. Edinbarough also served in paramilitary forces and in the Air Force. He is a Life Member of the ISTE, a senior life member of the IE (India), a member of ASEE and SME, and a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of Texas.

Adriana Olvera is currently a lecturer of Manufacturing Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). She received her Masters in Architecture from the School of Architecture of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), in 2011. She received her Bachelor’s in Architecture from Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), in 2007. Her current research interests include sustainable building design, building automation, and smart environments.

Anabel Pineda Briseño is a Professor SNI-C and head both of the Networking and Emerging Technologies Research Laboratory and Internet of Things Laboratory at the Instituto Tecnológico de Matamoros from Tecnológico Nacional de México. She received her Ph.D., from the Computer Research Center of the Mexican National Polytechnic Institute in 2013 working under Prof. Rolando Menchaca-Méndez and Prof. Giovanni Guzmán-Lugo. Her current research interests are analysis and design of positioning algorithms for distributed ad hoc wireless networks (MANETs, FANETs and WSN), Internet of Things (IoT) and Ubiquitous Computing.

Abstract

Collaborative technological development and innovation between UTRGV-ENGT, USA and ITM-CSE, Mexico: An Intelligent Closet Prototype

Abstract:

Due to its distinctive characteristics – economic development, culture, language, etc. – the border USA-Mexico is without a doubt a region with particular challenges, as well as opportunities, which go beyond any boundary. These particular complications, enhance the importance of the region known as the “Rio Grande Valley”, turning it into a transformation and integration axis in the globalization course for both countries.

These challenges place the higher education institutions in a role of great responsibility with great opportunities: new strategies on demand for innovative collaboration; the main goal is set to restructure basic and applied research in technological development, innovation and entrepreneurship, to thrive the results and its effectiveness.

Therefore, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Campus Brownsville and the Instituto Tecnologico de Matamoros (ITM), as leader institutions in higher education, actively work together towards bi-national collaboration schemes, in order to contribute to the economic development and social wellness, on both sides of the border.

A successful example of these collective efforts is the development of a completely functional automation prototype, designed, built and coded by UTRGV-ENGT and ITM-CSE students, as part of their graduation requirements, led by faculty from both institutions.

The results promote collaborative partnership for future basic and applied research settings, towards a united bi-national Rio Grande Valley region, focusing on the social needs, by providing solutions to the economic and developmental problems of this particular region.
