Cyrus Habibi is an Assistant Professor in the department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2010. His primary research interests are in the field of signal processing, dielectric spectroscopy and sensors. Specifically, he is interested in developing novel medical devices. In addition to his technical research, he is also an active member of American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and conducts research in engineering education.
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) have made huge impact on industry and society at large. The PLC systems are the major key in the technology and industrial sector today. PLCs make machinery and systems work automatically and are responsible for the growth in production and manufacturing process. In addition to manufacturing, several industries such as transportation, amusement rides, or film making industry use PLC to overhaul the electric operations of an object. Although most engineering technology programs have implemented PLC in their curricula, some electrical engineering programs have oversighted the PLC training. Engineering students with some PLC training have better career opportunities than those who do not have. Projects and Tools is a freshman level course offered to electricidal engineering students at the University of XXXX. This one credit laboratory course provides hands-on experience for electrical engineering students; students complete several projects such as 555 timers, logic circuits, and measurements of electrical quantities during the period of this course. A two weeks PLC project has been developed and implemented in Projects and Tools course in Fall 2019. Students were introduced to ladder logics programming and were asked to design a PLC program for performing specific tasks. Students’ feedbacks and comments will be collected at the end of semester to investigate the impact of the module on students. This study will include the detail of the project and the results of the survy.
