Nora is an Assistant Professor in the Engineering Education Department at The University of Cincinnati. She holds a PhD in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development for the University of Louisville, a MS in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University and a BS in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Tech. She also has extensive industrial experience.
Teaching Students Good Teaming Skills: An Interactive Seminar Note: A few years ago the facilitator ran a similar style seminar focused on maintaining interesting in engineering with first year students. The participants enjoyed the opportunity to meet in small groups to discuss ideas. I am submitting proposals two this year. This one and one on cheating. Importance of teamwork A team is a group of people who work towards a common goal and has shared responsibility for the outcomes. According to both Monster.com and Forbes.com, collaboration skills are highly favored by employers. Although team dynamics at work and school are quite different, teaching students to function well in teams while in college is an important endeavor. The goal of this seminar is to help educators improve their students’ experiences with team projects. The facilitator will present a short (5-10 minute) review of the literature on best practices for mentoring teams of first year engineering students. Then educators will meet in small groups to reflect on their experiences with team projects and share ideas on how to improve students’ team experiences and learning. Finally, the groups will join and share their main take-aways from their group discussions. Session Introduction Review current literature on teaming and teaching effective team work. Take a minute to reflect on your personal experiences with teams you have served on. Was everyone working towards a common goal? Was everyone held accountable for the outcome? Did you feel comfortable expressing your opinion? Did you value the ideas of others? Breakouts into small groups: Introduce yourself: your university, classes you teach, how long you have been teaching. Team projects you have assigned: Briefly describe team projects you have assigned – (expected time frame, topics, deliverables, number of people on a team, how you assign team members, etc. Issues and successes: What types of issues have you observed on student teams? What have you found to be successful? Instructions you give on being an effective team member: what instruction/mentoring/tools do you introduce your students that can help them learn to function well as team. List ideas to help students be successful on teams. Rank the ideas. Summary of group discussions Bring group back together. Take turns listing ideas to help students build the skills to work well on team projects.
