Abstract

As libraries move into the 21st century, more immersive technologies must be introduced and provided to maintain a lasting presence with library faculty, staff, and users. Arduino is a great introductory product of bringing supportive technology in the library for all users on campus. Arduino is a microcontroller that can be used in various disciplines such as engineering, agriculture, music, and art. The software is open source, which keeps the costs at a minimum while promoting hands-on learning. This work explains one process of the planning, design, and implementation that went into bringing Arduino to the University of Libraries. Additionally, this work will guide potential seekers of similar tasks through the process from ordering the parts, organizing the kit, storage, cataloging, crafting a checkout policy, marketing, introducing to library faculty and staff, to final roll out and feedback. It is hoped that this model can serve as a guide or for other librarians who wish to introduce technologies in their library for checkout.
