Dr. Fidan serves as a Professor in the Department of Manufacturing and Engineering Technology at Tennessee Technological University. His research and teaching interests are in additive manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, distance learning, and STEM education. Dr. Fidan is a member and active participant of SME, ASEE, ABET, ASME, and IEEE. He is also the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology, Journal of Engineering Technology, Journal of Advanced Technological Education, and International Journal of Rapid Manufacturing.
Dr. Ankit Gupta is serving as the assistant professor in the department of Engineering Technology at Mississippi Valley State University. He has an expertise in in additive manufacturing processes (Laser sintering and Fused Filament Fabrication) and advanced materials (metal alloys, ceramics and high temperature polymers). During the course of his studies, he has gained solid and hands-on experiences on continuous and short fiber composite 3D Printing and low-cost metallic printing, their fabrication, characterization, computational modeling and analysis. He is also member and active participant of Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME-S215) student chapter for 4 years.
Dr. Seymur Hasanov is an Assistant Professor in Engineering Technology at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His research expertise is in computational modeling and experimental characterization of fiber-reinforced multi-material composites fabricated by additive manufacturing methods. His teaching interests are computer-aided machine design, engineering mechanics, and manufacturing processes. Dr. Hasanov is a member and active participant of ASME, ASEE, and SME.
Dr. Alisa Henrie serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the College of Professional Studies in the Engineering Technology Program at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Her research and teaching interest are in smart materials, compliant mechanisms, serving nontraditional students, distance learning and STEM education. Dr. Henrie is a member and active participant of ASME, ASEE and SWE.
Dr. Perihan Fidan is a faculty member at the Curriculum and Instruction department at Tennessee Tech University. Her current research interests include STEM education, 3D printing, and incorporating literacy into STEM classrooms. She is a member of the American Educational Research Association, National Science Teaching Association, International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, and the National Association of Multicultural Education.
Delivering hands-on design and manufacturing courses is challenging in several lecture and laboratory settings. This type of instruction is even harder lately due to higher education institutions' strict COVID-19 policies and procedures, since offering the courses in on-ground settings is not a possibility. One method practiced by a high number of educators to meet course learning outcomes and ABET student outcomes is to implement the Flipped Classroom technique. In a Flipped Classroom, course lectures and laboratories are provided to students earlier than the class time. Then, class times are used to provide more practice and content so that students can learn more in their regular lectures and lab hours. This paper reports the structure of a few Flipped Classroom courses from a diverse group of institutions and the evaluation results received from these courses.
