Seongjun Ha is an M.S. in Aviation and Aerospace Management student at Purdue University. He earns a B.S degree in aviation technology from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and A.S.S degree in Aviation Maintenance from Idaho State University. He holds FAA UAS and Airframe & Powerplant mechanic certificates.
Gita Andhika Swastanto is a MS Aviation and Aerospace Management student in the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University. His study is fully funded by Fulbright Scholarship by the U.S. Department of State. He earned his B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. Mr. Gita has five years’ work experience in Aircraft MRO company as an aircraft development engineer.
Professor, and Associate Head for Graduate Studies and Research, at Purdue University School of Aviation and Transportation Technology in West Lafayette, Indiana. She earned her BS, MS, and PhD in Industrial Engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington. She has aerospace industry and university academic experience. Her research focuses on data driven analysis and process improvement in sustainability, process automation, and general aviation.
Aviation has become a trusted forefront and reliable mode of transportation for both people and goods. In recent years, the rapid growth of the air transport industries has also increased International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United Nations (UN) attention to sustainable aviation. In alignment with ICAO’s promotion of sustainability actions and plans, this paper explores the impacts of aircraft engine washes, not only in terms of technical impacts but also environmental impacts.
This paper describes the education environment and inclusion of engine washing technologies in courses. To enable students to more fully understand aviation sustainability, one way that might be effective is to combine practical and technical knowledge. Therefore, aerospace and aeronautical education environments need to teach students practical engine washing technologies and the sustainability impacts. This paper may be useful in educational environments as a starting point of including both practical and sustainability knowledge in courses.
