Dr. Massood Towhidnejad is Professor of Software Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. His research interest includes: Software Engineering, Software Quality Assurance and Testing, Autonomous Systems, Air Traffic Management, and STEM Education. In addition to his university position, he served as a Visiting Research Associate at the FAA, Faculty Fellow at NASA Goddard Flight Research Center, and Software Quality Assurance Manager at Carrier Corporation.
Over the years, there has been little change in the way majority of the academic departments in US universities conduct their day-to-day affairs. However, due to the competitive nature of the industries there has been a significant advances in the way and organization operates in the industry. These innovative approaches usually resulted in to more efficient product delivery while improving the product quality. For example, large number of manufacturing organizations have adopted the Lean process as part of their operation, while others has adopted agile process to improve their software development operations. There are number of commonalities between the agile and lean processes, but one of the most significant commonalities between the two processes is the elimination of waste. Over the last three years, the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has been involved in a project with the main objective of changing this individualistic culture at the department. To accomplish this goal, we adopted an agile techniques from software development, specifically Scrum, that provide a framework for teamwork. This paper provides an overview of some of the advantages and challenges that the research team recognized based on the implementation of this process at the department level.
