, in the aftermath of COVID-19, two events occurred at the South Dakota School ofMines and Technology (SD Mines) that significantly impacted each other: the institution wasawarded an NSF ADVANCE Adaptation Grant (NSF EES 2121601), and the Office of FacultyDevelopment and Advancement (OFDA) was created. While they had different paths tocreation, they share common goals and a synergy that are beneficial to the success of each. Prior to running the course, we studied the university’s Energy MasterPlan, learned about the current state of solar energy on campus, and identified four potential newsolar projects. We divided the 14 students in the class into four teams, with each team conductinga feasibility assessment for their solar project over the course of the class. Students started byexploring the solar we already have on campus. StrengthsIntroductionIt has long been known that there is much to be learned from failures in engineering. Engineeringcontent aside, we can also learn from the primary causes of these failures. A 1976 study byMatousek and Schneider involving 800 cases of structural failure resulting in 504 deaths and 592injuries found that when engineers were at fault, 36% of the failures were due to insufficientknowledge on behalf of the engineers [1].
