theanalysis of 10 semi-structured interviews obtained from five senior systems engineering studentsin the capstone project at the lead author’s institution. First, our research indicates theinterdependence among cognitive processes, discursive identity, and the students’ work context.Second, our research explores the interdependence among the various judgments students mustmake in order to construct the knowledge constituting their senior projects. constructs of design activity engagement [4]–[7],motivation [8]–[10] and situated cognition [11]–[14]. Design activity engagement frames thesocial context of our investigation [4] and describes the complex cognitive [7], [15], [16] andsocial processes [2], [17] involved in the design process within a capstone course. Theseprocesses are a result from the structure of capstone courses, within which students engage incomplex open-ended projects and collaborate with student peers as well as professionalengineers sponsors. The Gallup-Purdue index went on to find how satisfied alumni were with their alma maters.It was found that if the alumni felt that their college prepared them for life, their engagement atwork was tripled. CIT-E community of practice (CoP) is a group of faculty members who teach civilinfrastructure-related courses at different institutions. Currently, the CoP is supported by awebsite and a model course on Canvas. The model course is composed of 43 lessons that aregrouped into five categories: Fundamentals, Water, Energy, Transportation, and Capstone. InSpring 2021, a survey was conducted among the CIT-E CoP, which revealed that over 4,000students have been impacted by the group, and that respondents are enthusiastic about improvingtheir understanding of and pedagogical skills related to addressing issues that connectinfrastructure and social justice in the classroom [1]. The course also included topics in ethics, theengineering method, and teamworking. Team activities and hands-on small projects inducedthem to know each other and develop community sense. INGE-3002 deepened students’knowledge about their chosen field of study and the importance of basic engineering courses forbeing successful later on in their study programs [13].
