venues for target patron groups and a plan to supervise marketing projects weredesigned. Future plans include evaluating specific marketing venues for their effectiveness inreaching specific target markets.IntroductionLibrarians have been talking (and writing) about marketing for years. For the most part, librarians have accepted that marketing must be done, but marketing is infrequently the primaryjob description of a librarian.1A marketing plan and marketing tools, if well designed, can help tocreate a constant awareness among library staff and faculty for the need to reach out to patrons.Marketing effectively informs and compels patrons to use library services, which in turnproduces positive user experiences as they successfully use library

and compares the statistical use patterns before and after the change. Theuniversity library ultimately changed its plan to more closely meet user needs by limiting thenumber of publishers, maintaining high use titles, and selecting specific titles as needed.Additionally, problems that were encountered before and after the change are discussed.IntroductionPurdue University is a tier-one research university with approximately 40,000 students andsupports undergraduate and graduate students in computer-related departments and schools in theColleges of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Management. The Purdue UniversityLibraries system is a decentralized system with 13 locations. Three libraries regularly purchasecomputer books. The addition

for group discussion and consultation on this floorand expect it to be a more active floor. The carpet on the first floor is the most worn and in needof replacement. This is where this process began. Since the Provost was responsible for thechoice of carpet in 1999, we needed his support and approval to have the carpet replaced. Withhis consent, all was on target for replacement over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks in 2006.Enter the concept of an information commons with flexible learning spaces and the opportunityto reclaim space in our building from Academic Information Services (AIS), and the process wassuspended. Carpet replacement had not required an approved plan. The anticipated changes inthe project required that we submit a plan to

Assessing Information Literacy in Engineering: Integrating a College-wide program with ABET-driven assessmentAs part of a college-wide effort, the Picker Engineering Program at Smith College developed acurriculum-integrated information literacy plan, and adopted information literacy criteria drawnfrom ACRL standards and faculty input. A review of the plan with an eye to assessment as wellas a revision of our ABET outcomes criteria and assessment plan led us to a second round ofinformation literacy criteria development. We sought to integrate the information literacyassessment plan with the overall ABET assessment plan for engineering. This process enabledus to streamline our criteria and facilitated the development of a realistic and rigorous

Marquand Library of Art and Archaeologyrenovation and expansion was completed in 2003, and five science branch libraries merged intothe new Lewis Library, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, in 2008. But the lastdecade has also been marked by profound technological changes, changes in the library’scollecting focus, as well as changes in users’ information seeking behavior. These changesaffected not only space planning, but also staffing requirements and service delivery methods, making it necessary to take a critical look at our existing libraries even when they are only eightyears old. In the wake of planning and building Lewis Science Library, new user needs wererevealed and valuable lessons were learned, which have been applied to the

The Reference and User Services Association division of the American LibraryAssociation includes expectations ranging from formal activities—"surveys of library users, faculty, staff and students to evaluate their satisfaction with library resources; regular meetingswith faculty to ascertain planned curriculum developments and to identify new resources;communication of available materials and services; and establishment of a process by whichlibrary users can suggest purchases"—to the informal "participation in campus organizations andactivities, monitoring campus media for activities and events that affect collections

library collaboration. The Library plans to study the effectiveness of information literacy instructional techniquesthrough the contextual setting of the Smart House. The Library seeks to improve the ability ofparticipants to access, evaluate, and use high quality research materials effectively through avariety of instructional strategies. By developing and maintaining a virtual infrastructure forinformation awareness and access using relevant technologies, the library will be able to assiststudents at their point of need. More direct instruction will be provided through a series of activelearning workshops combined with specialized research consultation. We believe that this projectwill promote the lifelong learning skills necessary for the

With a document stream guaranteed, wecould work with smaller collections (such as the Saline Waters) as they were identified, reviewed, and collected. For this reason, the Bureau of Mines series as well as the NationalBureau of Standards series are currently our "large" collections.Procuring Collections: Happenstance or planning? As we have moved into production mode, the quantity of materials needed to have a successfulmaterials stream has expanded dramatically. Though we have been working diligently to identifycollections for digitization, sometimes we must simply accept series as we become aware ofmaterials that fit our parameters and are readily available. Almost all of the faculty have included either libraryinstruction or one-on-one consultation with the librarian for the students in their classes, suggesting that they see the value of this process and support the information literacy goals of thelibrary and the university as a whole. In terms of the design classes, the senior year has been less structured, with librarian-studentinteraction left to the students

engineers’ level ofeducation and library use,” pointing out that the higher an engineer’s level of education, the morelikely he or she was to rely on libraries. This aspect needs broader study and further research. 3Finn and Johnston identify “the need to plan for better information literacy instruction” based onan engineering faculty and student survey.4 Fidel and Green’s study emphasizes that in order “tosuccessfully enhance engineers’ information-seeking, one needs to examine the specific factorsthat motivate an engineer to prefer one source over another;”5 while Haglund and Olsson focuson user perspective through a case study and suggest that the following issues need to beconsidered when designing information seeking aids or search tools

based on individual expertise. Each team member had the same number of pieces to write and was assigned an editing buddyfrom within the team. The idea was that an individual would create a training and assessmentpiece and then have their editing buddy provide feedback. The plan was designed to optimize ourprogress in moving forward. Before actually beginning to create training documents or tutorials we held several brainstormingsessions about different tools we could use. We realized early on that different competencieswould require different methods of training and assessment, and we explored many possibilities.Several team members looked into already created materials that are provided by librarywebsites, teaching librarians, or commercial

As holdings for most titles actually tend to be identical between the twocampuses, communicating in advance with the other campus about which titles are beingprepared for storage has become key to the process. Some of the workingdocuments include IEEE titles sent or currently being worked on, shared print titles with gaps, and processing procedures/forms to name but a few. there remainboth political and logistical challenges in this effort, given the particularly packed nature of theengineering curriculum and a strong resistance to change within the profession.7Building on this literature, and with the support of a college-wide curriculum-integratedapproach to information literacy, we have established a sequenced information literacycurriculum for engineering. The college’s formal information literacy program began in2003/2004 with an initial focus on first-year, writing-intensive courses, followed bydepartmental adoption of discipline-specific, sequenced, curriculum-integrated informationliteracy programs. Prior to the initial discussions and planning for this program in 2002, therewas not a college-wide formal
