Circuits CourseAbstract As engineering instructors, we continue to review and test novel pedagogical ideas thatcan better engage engineers in learning the challenging fundamentals of our very often rigorousengineering curricula. This paper explores one significant change to the laboratories of ourfundamental circuits course (ECEG 210) at Bucknell University. After students completed manycore laboratories during the first half of the semester, we challenged student teams to considernew applications of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology to provide reliable electricity to variouselectrical end-uses at the residential level (off-grid). virtual learning in 2020. After returning to on-campusactivities, these kits continued to be used to enable open-ended group projects, hands-onhomework assignments, and pre-laboratory exercises. We developed an affordable multi-courseelectronics kit by condensing three current hardware kits in the Circuit Analysis, Mechatronics,and Design Methodology courses. By removing redundant components and replacing expensiveparts with cheaper alternatives, we reduced the cost of the condensed kit by approximately 30%compared to purchasing the three course-specific kits. The duration of the research activities was approximately five months. During thisperiod, students and faculty met frequently. The faculty derived the dynamics of research experiences anddirectly mentored students owing to the central role of faculty support in UREs [17].
