science disciplines. Along withpreparing students for discipline-specific engineering courses, these remedial classes aim tobroaden their horizons and develop interdisciplinary skills for career success. However, neitherthe holistic views of interaction between different systems nor the complexity behind theirmanagement are provided to the engineering students. As a result, the engineering graduates veryoften find it challenging interacting and coordinating with different branches or sectors of theirworkplaces. It is important to mention that the number of engineering graduates pursuing careerin other disciplines are also increasing.Project management deals with planning and managing resources to implement real lifesolutions, and hence can

Some of the online resources include: Paul’s OnlineNotes, Khan Academy, and Math Insight. All of these supports provide assistance and guidancewhen planning lessons, creating exams and assignments that are reasonable yet challenging forstudents, and deciding how to link classroom knowledge to application problems and studentresearch. Seeking advice from mentors, colleagues, and other experienced teachers helped metremendously during my first year. These individuals provided valuable information about bestteaching practices, useful textbook and online resources, and how to balance the various

process, be a more creative and efficient designer, understand the consequences of design decisions, and create products, systems, or plans, that are sound, good, innovative, safe, and useful. Educators with more extensive design experience than my own have established andmaintained during the past 40 years that creativity, imagination, a step-by-step process of design, and many other factors work together to form a valid Science of Engineering Design. I now feelfar more confident that DESIGN 15 is serving the needs of our First-Year Engineering students.THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE Because of my love of TV and movies, and being blessed with an entertaining andhumorous personality, I decided to run the Lecture class as if it

Three Planning Assignments (PA) were developed requiring Teams to work throughDesign Steps Two through Five for their GDC project outside of Lab. The PlanningAssignments are completed and returned with constructive feedback and comments before theTeams begin construction on the GDC projects in the Lab. A list of the Planning Assignments with a brief description of each is as

Wedesigned part I of the laboratory experiments for the online students to make sure that they firstunderstand the concept discussed in the theory section of the course. We then expect the onlinestudents to design and build a new circuit in part II that replicates the results of the originalexperiment. We plan to conduct additional laboratory experiments in the Spring 2012 semesterwith two or more online students working together as laboratory partners. We have currentlydesigned two additional laboratory experiments that can be conducted completely online usingthe Agilent X-Series Oscilloscopes with integrated Function Generators. The

The VEX robotparts are regularly used by students for other projects and can be used for VEX competitions. In the future we plan to include a short quiz to test the knowledge gained by the students intopics such as torque, gear ratios, acceleration, and top speed. Correct answers in the quiz will berewarded as time subtracted from the team’s best elapsed time.Figure 5. Drag race start. The “Christmas tree” on the right used in starting each race. Professional Development: Activities for SiE students are selected to support student academic success while at Morgan, and to prepare them for graduate school or the workforce. At least two workshops are available each semester around four themes; Personal Development, Career Planning, Graduate School and Communication. 4. Community Building: Activities and interactions are structured to encourage interaction and a sense of community. These include monthly meetings and informal gatherings.Participant Recruitment, Selection and ProfileCurrent first and second-year undergraduate engineering students and newly admitted

implemented during the summer time, theFOM online course can be offered to high school students who plan to attend MSU School ofEngineering during the Fall and Spring semesters. This will allow MSU School of Engineeringto recruit students who have the right math skills before they start taking courses on campus. Forthose students who don’t have the right math skills (i.e. not ready for Calculus I), but still want toattend MSU School of Engineering, the online course can be used to help them acquire thoseskills during the summer period before they attend MSU. The results of the evaluation forms that are completed by the students at the end of eachsummer session are also very encouraging. The students indicate that the lessons are verythorough
