Doctoral students as course instructors: Three engineering teaching assistants’ socialization experiencesAbstractThe purpose of this study was to explore and understand the types of socialization experiencesthat result from engineering graduate teaching assistants‟ (TAs) roles as course instructors.Socialization refers to an individual‟s process of becoming a part of a group. In the context ofdoctoral education, socialization can be a complex area to study, largely because there are manyroles and groups for which graduate students can be socialized.Using situated learning, more specifically the communities of practice literature, as thetheoretical framework, this study looked at how three doctoral engineering TAs, with experienceas

What are the critical tasks? – Ethan I also learned the lesson that you have to value peoples‟ life experiences beyond just what their degree, or what their … credentialed criteria might be. – Emma I‟ve also learned some of the flags for what, when interviewing for people where you kind of go … I should probably look into that a little more or should ask more about it or, beginning to understand where that line is on people who volunteer too much information and, when have they really… okay, this is beginning to show a personality issue that‟s going to be beyond where I want to

those feelings are actually enacted in teaching. Page 22.757.3Teacher AutonomyAutonomy is directly related to motivation 10, 11. Autonomy is when a person‟s “actions arefreely chosen and experienced as emanating from oneself” 12. While research on autonomy ineducation originally focuses on students, more recent research has shown the importance ofteachers‟ sense of autonomy. Pelletier et al. 13 found that teachers‟ perceptions of constraints inthe teaching environment as well as of their students‟ self determination influenced the teachers‟self determination, which finally lead to whether or not the teachers supported their students‟autonomy

While the paper does discuss the classes created and implemented to build leadership abilities and attitudes in students, it does not emphasize the details of the courses, which can be found in the syllabi7.Description of Graduate Student PopulationGraduates from the master‟s degree programs in the School of Engineering at the University ofSt. Thomas are primarily working adults in the 30 to 50 year age group. Historically they havehad 10 years or more of industry experience before entering the program. However, this isdecreasing as more graduates of the bachelor engineering programs enter the graduate programs.Typically it takes students

and Oreowicz11 that engineeringgraduates, in particular Ph.D.’s, need to know how to teach for both academic and industrialcareers, and that ideally education in pedagogy occurs during graduate school. The paper goeson to point out that taking a pedagogy course and serving a teaching internship during graduateschool closely parallels the procedures used to prepare graduate students to do research. Wankatand Oreowicz12 observe that engineering students have proven to be very reluctant to takecourses from the College of Education. Students in engineering do not subscribe in significantnumbers. Perception is that content as not relevant to engineering instruction and instruction isdone in manner outside the comfort zone of engineering students

inthe Spring of 2010. Both graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, private consultants, andpublic servants are provided with the opportunity to learn from each other during this weeklyone-hour seminar. The establishment and overview of the seminar series are discussed along with thedevelopment of guidelines for student attendance. Involvement of faculty, students, andprofessionals was evaluated. Attendance at each seminar is a function of topic(s), presenter(s),and time commitment conflict (schedule conflicts with other classes or faculty sabbatical).Based on data from the Spring 2010 and Fall 2010 semesters, faculty attended 41 percent of theseminars, and students attended 43 percent of the seminars. Alumni ranked securing job after graduation as equally difficult tothis. As shown in graph, „obtaining a job after graduation‟ was one of the most difficult phaseschosen by alumni, as this option was not provided to current students

late. There may be no attack, no moment of epiphany, no catastrophe thatwill suddenly demonstrate the threat. Rather, there will be a slow withering, a gradual decline, awidening gap between a complacent America and countries with the drive, commitment andvision to take our place.”2. The Professional Science Master’s (PSM) Degree In response to this need a new type of degree, the Professional Science Master’s, wasestablished at research universities beginning in the early 2000’s using start-up funds providedby the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. It is designed for students who do not wish to continue on toa doctorate leading to an academic career but rather to enter the workforce with a master’sdegree, a degree now viewed by many as having

When the crystal issubjected to a force, it generates a small electrical charge. That charge is directly proportional tothe applied force. Using Newton’s Second Law (F=ma), it is very useful to use piezoelectricsensors to measure force and acceleration, opening a wide array of applications.2,3 Farlow, et alwere able to micromachine piezocomposite transducers with kerfs as small as 13 m, using acopper vapor laser.4Independent Study Research OpportunitiesMinerick, et al show that research can be used as a recruiting tool to draw talented high schoolstudents to the
