In order to address this problem, all members ofthe freshmen design teams are now required to watch a review module and pass an onlineassessment before turning in their final design reports.Project reports from both before and after the review module implementation were evaluatedusing a working drawing assessment rubric. Most students schooled in the US learn the Scientific Method in grade school, but lose track of it or consider it to be something for grade school science projects, not for the real world and not for engineers. Activities, or MEA's, are an extension to inductive learning which add additionalguidance to help ensure that students learn not only skills in teamwork, project management andcommunication but also the technical competencies of engineering. Two MEA's developed foruse in a Senior level undergraduate mechanical engineering course are discussed herein. Thefirst MEA in this course on mechanical measurements involves the design of a strain gaugebased load cell transducer. In the early 1970s, CSRE published thenewsletter/magazine SPARK, which emphasized the role of engineering in its social andpolitical-economic context, including especially labor relations. 11 SPARK highlighted andcriticized a range of “oppressive” applications of engineering skills and technology, withparticular attention paid to the connections between engineering and military.
