of the most important tools used by faculty to help studentsclose the gap between actual and desired performance. Additionally authentic, situatedenvironments are believed to benefit student learning. Studies of feedback in situated projectsare uncommon and needed. This study proposes the use of episodes as a discourse analysisframework to investigate feedback in an industrially situated virtual laboratory project. Whileepisodes have been used in other disciplines, they present a new framework for engineeringeducation research.This paper focuses on a case study of feedback provided to four teams of students as part of anopen-ended senior project. This paper will present the home automation project designed/developed bythe students based on a socket connection functions from the Java.net library. Themicrocontroller and network connections in conjunction with sensors are used to control devicesin a typical home.
