courses are typically included in the EngineeringTechnology Curriculum for an electronics system program. At Texas A&M University, the ElectronicSystems Engineering Technology (ESET) program is offered. For the embedded systems courses thatthe author has been teaching, students learn about microcontroller architecture and microcontrollerapplications. For the class projects, students can be given comprehensive programming and projectdemo assignments as a class project toward the end of the course. And, some of the students wouldtake the Capstone project courses in the following semesters. In this paper, the author presented theskills and knowledge that can be used from underwater robots and boat platforms to benefit embeddedsystems courses and

capstone project. Course HistoryENGR 4150 was first offered in Spring 2021, to support the first round of students in the newmechanical engineering program. The course was offered twice (Spring 2021 – 3 students, Spring2022 – 8 students) before the author started teaching the course in Spring 2023. In these first twoiterations of the course, the instructor used instrumentation design as the main teaching tool. Thestudents designed three pieces of equipment (a U-tube manometer, a Venturi, and a pump efficiencyrig) and in the process, learned key fluid mechanics concepts. One of the benefits of this approach is Proceedings of the 2025 ASEE Gulf-Southwest Annual Conference

group discussions often triggered additional comments from studentswhich may have been missed if the interviews were individual. Group discussions fostered synergy, encouraging more students to share their observations and experiences.Student FeedbackNotable AI tools include ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude AI, Google Gemini, and Meta AI.Although the University provides access to Microsoft Copilot [12], most students prefer ChatGPT[13], with 20% subscribing to its premium service. Students expressed dissatisfaction with Copilot, unanimously favoring ChatGPT.Figure 1 shows the results of the student survey organized by course: Senior Design (SD): A two-semester capstone design project in groups of 3 to 5 students.
