differentlevels of importance on the components of sustainability given in the Baldridge definition. Theapplied research presented in this paper provides a conceptual framework for translating strategyinto implementation results via a modified Plan – Do – Check – Act Shewhart / Demingimprovement opportunity identification and corrective action closed loop management cycle. The framework given in Figure 1 has proven effective in introducing discontinuous innovationsin an engineering technology business and has three best practices embedded that have enhancedinternal efficiencies as well. This framework may also make a contribution to those in higher education faced with thechallenge of reforming engineering education in the Engineering Management

ratheran introduction to project management and spreadsheets as an Engineering design tool. The classhas a very strong hands-on component using Microsoft Excel and MS Project. The students arethen required to use both tools in their later courses, particularly in their laboratory courses andplanning/tracking of the Capstone Design course. These students also take a Technical Writingcourse from the English Department to prepare them for report writing. We use several assignments of increasing difficulty to expose the students to Excel as a designtool and Project to organize and track a project. The quarter culminates with small teams ofstudents using both tools to design, plan, and track a virtual project of their choice such asstarting a small

business and technical functions of organizations. It was to meet this demand that university X, introduced an EM program at the undergraduatelevel effective Fall 2009.Undergraduate engineering management majors learn engineering fundamentals, together withthe art and science of planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controllingactivities in technological environments. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Managementequips entry-level engineers with knowledge of the business of engineering, making themvaluable to their employers and ensuring future professional growth. For students who enjoypeople and technology, the technical challenges of engineering, and the opportunity to integratehigher-level organizational

schedule cannot be violated. In accordance with theCorporation’s normal employee policies, each student was requested to fill out a weekly timecard documenting their effort expended, including task description and time expended on eachtask. As part of the corporation’s commitment, a corporate officer was to be in attendance at syllabus-scheduled reviews. Additionally, an interface, during class time, of pre-planned teleconferencesbetween all the students and a corporation representative was to take place every week. Theaudiologist agreed to participate in design reviews and to invite student teams to her clinicaloffice to view current hearing aid technologies, relevant programming issues and in respondingto patient expectations. The First Year

higher quality education where failure of any student may be consideredas a defect in the process. Due to variability in the process such as different type of instructionby different professors, a variation of quality exists. Variations of quality may be due to lack ofunderstanding of how students learn and adapting to different learning styles of students. Afteridentification of the issues and defining the problems, a solution can be developed using sixsigma approaches and models presented in this paper. A control chart can be used with UCL andLCL along with a continuous improvement plan to improve the higher education process. Thiswill result in higher quality and sustainable process in the institution with higher levels of studentsatisfaction
