The technological innovation of the US is quickly eroding unless current trends arereversed9. The percentage of American students pursuing Ph.D.s in engineering has declinedfrom 70% in 1985 to 55% in 200510 . Yet, only 64% of students who begin engineering doctoralprograms complete their degrees within a ten year period according to the Council of GraduateSchools11. Engineering Education, 2012 An Interdisciplinary Master of Sustainability ProgramAbstractA two year interdisciplinary Master of Sustainability program integrates knowledge onsustainable business practices, effective public policy and innovative design and engineeringapproaches. The rigorous coursework and field training offered will enable our graduates toconfront sustainability related issues with a systems approach to solution development. In itsinitial phase the program was structured as a cohort, requiring a common first year offoundational core courses that covered general sustainability topics across the degree's integrateddisciplines: Business, Engineering and Technology, Public Policy and Social Work, andEnvironmental Sciences

D’Alessandro is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Structural Engineering and Materials Pro- gram of Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, Va.). She received both her B.S. and M.S. from Clemson University. Once completing the Ph.D. program at Virginia Tech, D’Alessandro plans to pursue a career in academia to teach and to continue research on concrete structures. She also plans to pursue opportunities with engineering education research and K-12 outreach programs
