Diversity in Faculty Careers: Formative and Summative Assessment in a “Preparing Future Faculty” CourseAbstractDoctoral students’ understanding of the diversity of careers in higher education is an importantcomponent of their career development. During their doctoral study, emphasis is placed onresearch and coursework. Additionally, doctoral students are mentored during this time byresearch-focused faculty. However, many faculty positions across the nation are not research-focused and it is important to provide doctoral students with an understanding of the diversity offaculty careers available to them. Preparing Future Faculty is a course designed to facilitatedoctoral students’ exploration of the diverse

We alsoaddress the implications for graduate schools regarding the recruitment and support ofreturning students.IntroductionReturners are those with undergraduate degrees who work outside of academia for at least fiveyears and come back to the academic setting to earn a graduate degree. asks, “What can be done at the graduate level toensure that engineering Ph.D. students are acquiring the desired characteristics to be successfulin academic and industrial careers?” Our findings suggest that engineering Ph.D.s working in avariety of sectors identify different skills that students can acquire during their graduate schoolexperiences. Both industry and academic professionals confirm a need for more frequentinteractions between industrial professionals and doctoral engineering students.IntroductionEngineering doctoral graduates often are criticized for being narrowly trained in their disciplines, for being ill-prepared for the professional workplace,1 and for not being flexible in a changingglobal environment.2 Multiple initiatives

In addition, the AmericanSociety of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recommends a master’s degree or the equivalent of 30 creditsbeyond a bachelor’s degree as part of the minimum body of knowledge for licensed professionalengineers. Finally, students whose end goal is a career in professional practice have indicated apreference for graduate programs focused on design knowledge essential for the advancement ofstructural engineering practice. These needs provided the opportunity for the creation of a newprofessional master’s program in structural engineering at Lehigh University.Launched in summer 2008, the program is led by a full-time professor of practice with industrydesign experience and guided by an

Despiteseemingly limited options, I was not challenged after graduating from high school to be criticalof my career path. Upon graduating from University, I became aware of the choice of optionsbefore me: I could work in engineering industry, I could pursue my entrepreneurial dreams, Icould pursue graduate research in engineering, I could pursue graduate work in another area ofinterest. Faced with these decisions, I started to be critical of my career and my goals for furthereducation. I started to question how graduate studies would benefit me in the future. My criticalperspectives started in undergraduate studies and have been

In a time ofeconomic uncertainty, planning and decision-making must be based on an awareness of thelarger societal (and perhaps global) context in which they occur to ensure both the wisestallocation of scarce resources and the best preparation of students for their future careers. Highereducation and graduate education are increasingly scrutinized and pushed to demonstrate valueto the potential student (and possibly to the taxpayers who may provide funding to state-assistedpublic universities and institutions of higher education). Some of the current trends in graduate and higher education are reviewed to help graduateprograms in engineering and technology better

As the fraction ofdoctorates employed in tenure track positions in academia continues to decline and becomehighly competitive, it might be more than ever important for graduate schools in general toredefine the PhD as also training for high-level positions in careers outside academia besidespreparing them for an academic position.  Page

This is especially true in the case ofhigh enrollment and service courses such as English, mathematics, foreign languages andintroductory courses in disciplines such as psychology and sociology. Although the specificresponsibilities of TAs vary among institutions and even between departments within the sameinstitution, many graduate students serving in these positions are asked to deliver content andeven serve as primary instructors1. These teaching responsibilities are important to graduatestudent development as individuals who intend to pursue careers

Essentially, all of theparticipants were currently working on engineering education research in some capacity. The pre-workshop survey was used to obtain a better understanding of graduate students’ viewsabout the current state of graduate student collaborations. Based on our results, the most commonperception was that graduate students are indeed collaborating with peers apart from workingwith a faculty member. However, the students’ perceptions of the frequency of thesecollaborations varied. Half of the participants perceived that this type of collaboration happensonly once over the course of a graduate student’s career, while others perceived that if graduatestudents are, in fact, conducting research with their peers
