These laboratory exercises tend to deal solely with the materialbeing addressed in the lectures for the particular course. Consequently, not only are theselaboratories limited to one Civil Engineering sub-discipline but also limited to the material beingtaught in the specific course. Thewriting guide currently contains sections detailing reports, figures, tables, equations, references,memos, homework, professional e-mails, and a general grading rubric. Many high-risk active learning techniqueshave been documented in recent literature, including field trips,5 peer teaching,6 class discussionson open-ended questions,7-8 hands-on manufacturing, laboratory testing,9-10 project-basedlearning,11 and cross grading and debate.12 The flipped classroom technique is also a new andeffective method of teaching13 where traditional lectures are converted to readings assigned tostudents outside of class and the class time is used for homework assignments and otheractivities.
