multiple laboratorysections. Laboratory sections were taught by the same Teaching Assistant to avoid epistemicvariation. The laboratory data was collected the first week by the students and subsequentlyanalyzed in a second week of the laboratory. The students’ reports were submitted for gradingone week after that. Thirty three laboratory reports were evaluated with a resulting average scoreof 2.0 and a standard deviation of 0.9. Therefore, the student outcome for 2007 was achievedand a baseline for future evaluation was established. Although the cutoff was met, the classaverage was exactly at the cutoff score and enhancements were qualitatively deemed advisable toaddress the level 1 performer. The DSL course had to adopt a teamteaching approach due to the different sub-disciplines, but such team teaching was unfamiliarand unconventional to students. Even though the course professors had clear communicationbetween themselves as to the labs to be performed and assignments, the students’ perception ofthe organization was that the course was mismanaged, leadership unclear and the syllabusschedule unorganized. Those teaching the course need to have intimate knowledge of the topics they are responsiblefor to be able to lead students through the different laboratory exercises. Many high-risk active learning techniqueshave been documented in recent literature, including field trips,5 peer teaching,6 class discussionson open-ended questions,7-8 hands-on manufacturing, laboratory testing,9-10 project-basedlearning,11 and cross grading and debate.12 The flipped classroom technique is also a new andeffective method of teaching13 where traditional lectures are converted to readings assigned tostudents outside of class and the class time is used for homework assignments and otheractivities. This paper presentsperceptions and attitudes of students that have participated in a Project-Based Learning (PBL)course in environmental engineering.
