and minorities continue to be underrepresented in engineering, both nationally and atRoger Williams University. In 2012, women constituted just 12% of engineering graduates at theuniversity, while minorities constituted just 4%. In an effort to boost the enrollment, performance,and persistence of underrepresented students, the university applied for and received an NSF S-STEM grant to integrate engineering, biology, and marine biology students into an existingprogram supporting underrepresented students on campus. participated in this six-week nanotechnology summer research program in 2015 and who then integratednanotechnology into the classroom over the 2015-2016 academic school year. Second, we reportobservational data from five teachers’ nano-lessons by using a modified version of the ScienceTeacher Inquiry Rubric (STIR).5 Third, using the Student Attitudes toward STEM (S-STEM)survey,6 we present changes in these teachers’ students’ attitudes towards STEM, as well aschanges in students’ perceptions of their own 21st century skills. TheSchool of Engineering has an S-STEM grant which is currently in its final year ofadministration to support scholarships for females, minorities and economically challengedstudents. The activities produced for this cohort have been singled out by the students andthrough program assessment as being impactful for student success to aid them in maintainingthe grade point averages to keep their scholarships (> 2.5 for freshman; >3.0 all years after). Engineering self-efficacy is emerging as a usefultheory in evaluating the confidence of students to pursue engineering related professions and theconfidence of teachers to teach engineering related content. In particular, Faber et al. [5] andYoon et al. [18] developed the Student Attitudes toward STEM (S-STEM) survey and TeachingEngineering Self-Efficacy Scale (TESS) survey, respectively. Such surveys used in conjunctionwith outreach activities may help allocate time and resources to more influential activities. She has a been a practitioner of retention programming for over two decades and is a member of several organizations and networks that support her research interest: access and inclusion to STEM education. She is the primary PI for the NSF sponsored S-STEM award, ”Engineering Pathways: An Undergraduate Scholars Program.” Dr
