Matlab was still being used to calculate and visualize results, the new lab activities motivate students to practice a variety of valuable research and communication skills.  Regular homework and testing is also important to ensure that students retain theoretical material underlying the physical/virtual experiments. Blending of both instructional techniques resultedin a project driven flipped class, in which the students had the motivation provided by an open-ended design project mixed with the flexibility of a flipped class.
