Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching, and developed several innovative, educational technologies, including StatTutor and the Learning Dashboard. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019 Extending Systems Thinking Skills to an Introductory Mechanical Engineering CourseAbstractDespite a widespread acknowledgement of the importance of systems thinking and systemsengineering, most undergraduate programs in mechanical engineering do not formally instructstudents in those subjects. While producing graduates ready to fill the role of a systems engineeris not realistic, it is feasible to train mechanical engineering graduates that can successfullyparticipate

Education, 2019 Exploiting Digital Twin Technology to Teach Engineering Fundamentals and Afford Real-World Learning Opportunities University of Southern CaliforniaAbstractThis paper presents an innovative instructional approach that capitalizes on digitaltwin technology to transform traditional lectures into “learning-by doing”experiences in the course laboratory. In this paper, we address how the use ofdigital twin technology in laboratory simulation environments affords studentsauthentic learning experiences, i.e., experiences that reflect what a learner isexpected to encounter in the real-world. The immediate feedback feature, enabledby the connection of the digital twin to the physical twin, provides

previously served as Director of Research and interim Director of the Georgia Tech Research Institute, and before that had a successful career in the aerospace industry for Lockheed Martin. While at GTRI he led a period of successful growth that doubled GTRI’s revenues and impact, and led the creation of GTRI’s cybersecurity, systems engineering, and autonomous systems research programs. His Lockheed Martin career culminated as the F-22 Raptor Avionics Manager where he led the team to Raptor 4 avionics first flight. He leads research and teaches in the areas of engineering leadership, systems thinking, and socio-technical enterprises. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019
