As shown in figure 2,students practice the embedded skills in the five core themes multiple times per course. The finalcourse of the sequence allows students to select a capstone project. The five core engineeringthemes are the underlying structure to all major projects, quick builds and capstone projects. Figure 2. Design challenges covered within the 3 coursesThe engineering design and project management themes (Figure 1) are generally new to moststudents and therefore do not require significant differentiation. The remaining themes ofengineering analysis, technical communication, fabrication and prototyping are

experiential learning in engineering education. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019 Assessing the Impact of Embedding Nursing Students in Bioengineering Senior Design Projects: Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Team Benefits and ChallengesAbstractProfessional experiences are a cornerstone of both bioengineering and nursing undergraduateprograms. Bioengineering students gain real-world experience by participating in their team-based senior-design capstone projects. Similarly, Nursing students typically completecoursework that exposes them to other professional fields as part of transitioning to professionalpractice. At the University of Pittsburgh, the

The senior design project can serve as an excellentculminating experience in the program of study when it focuses on research and design projectsthat have practical value to consumers or to industry. For the Engineering Technology Departmentat Drexel University, the senior design course is a year-long educational journey (three quarters)that takes an idea generated by a student or an industrial sponsor and culminates in a product orproject. This course is an excellent capstone experience, which requires both teamwork andindividual skills in

Students who areworking on a long-term design project can use this active classroom time in order to acquire theskills they have identified as necessary to accomplish their project.Engineering course projects, and especially the engineering capstone experience, are oftenexperiences that revolve around group work in the service of a large and complex project. Byblending the flipped classroom approach with a project-based learning approach, the goal is thatthe students will be better prepared for both the capstone experience and professional life post-graduation. Engineering programs, in general, andcapstone design programs, in particular, that seek innovative conceptual solutions to complexproblems would benefit from techniques to develop and assess student creativity. Therefore, astudy was performed to evaluate two such techniques. Over the first two years of the study, capstone design students in the United States Air Force Academy’s Department of EngineeringMechanics were each assigned to one of 14 teams which received various learning experiences(treatments) intended to enhance individual creativity and design project

To ensure thatstudent projects are along the same trajectory that the industry is moving, educators mustcontinually introduce emerging techniques, practices, and applications into the curriculum. Thefield of wireless sensor networks is growing rapidly, and there is increasing interest in providingundergraduate students with a foundation in the area. It is crucial that the emerging field ofwireless sensor networks be integrated into the undergraduate computer science and engineeringcurricula. whether intentional, verticalalignment of engineering experiences ultimately better prepares BME undergraduates for theirsenior design capstone projects and their professional pursuits.IntroductionInductive teaching methods have encouraged higher levels of student cognition [1]-[2], improvedstudent teamwork and communication [3], and allowed increased student confidence duringengineering design prototyping [4]. Paired with a resurgence of hands-on learning in theengineering community [5], inductive teaching methods allow instructors to incorporate realproblems that require physical prototype solutions. systems, like Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) orEnvisionTM, are essentially rubrics for professional projects and have been used to introduce civilengineering students about sustainable design and evaluate capstone projects [4, 9]. Althoughthey are valuable learning tools, professional rating systems are often limited to a subset ofproject topics (i.e., infrastructure) and may be difficult for students to apply to their morenarrowly scoped projects. In order to address the assessment tool gap, we sought to develop a sustainable design rubric thatcould be applied to student projects across engineering disciplines and to employ a rigorousconstruct validation process for the rubric’s development. experiences may be problematic as an abundanceof anecdotal evidence and calls by professional engineering organizations, including ASEE andNAE, suggest that engineers must learn to work effectively with accounting, marketing, communications, and other functional group members within a given organizational structure toattain project success. And while those calls are not new, there are only a handful of documentedundergraduate-level capstone experiences focusing on leadership development that have crossedcollege boundaries in a graded academic course, and thus have a higher level of risk for thestudent versus extra- or co-curricular activities.A survey of engineering alumni in senior management positions identified the ability toeffectively work in

be successful in providing theses for graduate students that clearly containedmore than theses performed in similar subjects without senior capstone design teamcontributions. The quality of those theses are usually superior, for example [2,9,10,11,12,13].Papers generated from those theses were more likely to receive recognition and higher marks inpeer reviews. Hence, we again employed these methods in the project at hand. The project’s staffing was organized in the typical fashion with a major professor chairing acommittee of three professors for a Master’s degree with thesis. A graduate mentor wasappointed and, through a documented self-selection process, a team of undergraduates wasappointed [14,15]. For a senior capstone design project
