study and identified that students were ill-equipped todeal with the rigors of the engineering curriculum, particularly in the areas of problem solving, professional writing, and computer programming. Therefore, to address these areas, UTA hasrecently created a new first year engineering course that uses the Student-Centered ActiveLearning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies (SCALE-UP) method. This presentationwill include an overview of not only student performance broken down by several student groupsbut also early surveys showing student perception of the effectiveness of this method. The resultswill show that these pedagogies are effective in aiding students to learn the principles ofengineering. In addition, student surveys will show

He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is a registered Profes- sional Engineer (PE). Dr. James is also an avid inventor with over two dozen patents and he has several publications in peer reviewed journals related to his research in biomechanical systems. Prior to joining academia, he worked for over a decade in the consumer products industry, most recently as Senior Vice President of Global Engineering at Techtronic Industries, headquartered in Hong Kong, where he lived with his family for several years. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019

engagement and learning outcomes [8]. These ten practices are: first-yearexperiences, common intellectual experiences, learning communities, writing intensive courses, collaborative assignments, experiencing different worldviews, community-based learning, capstone experiences, undergraduate research, and internships. In particular, undergraduateresearch and internships are relevant to engineering education but are not utilized by allundergraduate students (as opposed to a required capstone design experience). Thisunderstanding of high impact practices, the engineering education landscape, and the variationsin access to these experiences amongst students led to the focus on the role of undergraduateresearch and internships on engineering task self
