student survey is reflective qualitative remarks from individual commentssubmitted after course completion. The individual comments were in the form of an open endedessay with the writing prompt framed with three questions: What are the things you reallyappreciated about the course or things that could have be done better, what are the concepts thatyou learned that you think will help you in your continued career at Fulbright (and beyond!), andwhat are the things that surprised you that you learned about yourself through your time inCreating & Making.Students wrote between 500 to 1500 words for their personal reflections and the information wasthen compiled and evaluated as to congruence with the breakdown of elements in active learning

Students mightchoose STEM due to alluring job prospects, pressure or encouragement from family members, orthe recommendations of an instructor or counselor. Others might be following a passion forscience or math, or using their undergraduate program as an intermediate step in their journeytowards an advanced degree [3], [4]. Of primary interest for this analysis is the influence ofperson-to-person interactions that fostered students’ interests in STEM. institutionalarrangements necessary to help students develop these skills have not yet settled into a widelyadopted standard. Many engineering programs have turned to STS to provide students withconceptual tool kits to think about engineering problems and solutions in more sophisticatedways. Some programs feature standalone courses on the sociocultural aspects of technology andengineering, often taught by faculty from outside the engineering school. Others incorporate STSmaterial into traditional engineering courses, e.g., by making ethical or societal impactassessments part of capstone projects. Nilsson set out to present course content through examplesthat students were familiar with in their everyday lives, rather than via applications that theymight have had very little personal experience with. when architecture majors enroll in engineering coursesin the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited degree programs. Theproblem deepens when the setting changes from a public institution to a private liberal artsinstitution. careers, as engineering educators we must also concern ourselves with how studentslearn to see themselves in a global context. Students increasingly seek out short-term globalexperiences, with a majority of U.S. students now participating in programs less than 8 weeks induration [10], a trend that has sparked a corresponding focus in the international educationliterature. A short-term study abroad experience linked to a global engineering course at our owninstitution has become the fastest-growing and largest faculty-led program.
